  • Coworker Thinks It's Fine To Scam A Small Business So l Snitched

There's a small restaurant that we used to frequent and they have a loyalty program. Spend X amount of money and get X amount of points, which is redeemable for different food items. They would scan their membership then pay to legitimately get their points. After the transaction and when no one is looking, they would scan again in hopes of getting the next paying customer's order
  • and points. I told them it's not right scamming a hard-working small business, but they just brushed it off and was able to quickly rack up a lot of points. Something happened at work on two occasions and when they refused to clean up their mess, I involved the supervisor. Because of this, coworker has been ignoring me ever since.
  • Knowing that this is the type of person they are, I emailed the restaurant about this scam. I didn't want to tell the restaurant in person because I didn't want them to accidentally say it was me who told them. Restaurant was already aware of this scam (possibly done by others too) and I provided a description of coworker's height and ethnicity. I'm not sure if they have been back to the restaurant, but I hope they are caught and banned.
  • Some commenters embraced this kind of behavior while others rejected it.

ProfJasonRio Most restaurants have such low profit margins (~4-6%), you did them a favor, even if they already knew.
  • Upstairs-Mall-3... You did the right thing. Scamming a small business isn't funny or harmless. Your coworker was taking advantage of people working hard to survive. Snitching was justified. Don't feel bad, you showed integrity.
  • Silbesti What did the people after them say when their loyalty card didn't work, that's what I am curious about!?

  • frizzletide They ignored you over cleaning up their own mess, and now this? Karma's got a way
  • CityCabCat I mean your coworker is wrong, obviously. But this doesn't really read like you did this just because it was the right thing to do. It kinda feels like you already had issues with them and this was your moment to get them back. They're shady, but this also feels personal on your end.
  • Boudr3aux Seems like he's not scamming/hurting the business at all. He's stealing from the other customers. Still a thing, but details matter. How is the business getting scammed?
  • Outrageous_Guard_674 If the customer after him didn't have a loyalty card then the business is now giving out points that it wouldn't have otherwise.
  • Conscious-Weight4569 OP For customers who signed up for the loyalty program, their points were stolen. For customers who did not sign up, the business was stolen from because points were given to coworker when it shouldn't. Coworker was able to rack up points quickly and redeemed for free foods, at the business' expense.
  • [deleted] Playing off being petty as a moral issue...by someone. who probably would cherry pick morality and say scamming large corporations is fine. You are not anywhere near a good person, this post does not do you the favors you think it does (even while spinning the narrative you're morally above your coworker), and I really hope you don't hold. that perception of yourself.
  • Strange-Craft352 You act like there's nothing the restaurant can do if the next person in line wants to scan their app. They can just cancel it and have them rescan their own app. Restaurants rewards systems are notoriously
  • anyway, you probably have to go 10 times to get one side for free. Your coworker isn't hurting anyone and you quite literally tattled on them because they upset you, grow up.
